What an automated Website Check can and cannot tell you

Automated reviews are useful and limited. Here is where the line is, so you can use a report without over-trusting a number.

What an automated check actually does.

An automated review fetches a handful of your public pages the way a visitor or a search engine could, reads their code and text, and records facts: does the page load, is it served over HTTPS, is there a title and a description, how many main headings, is there a tap-to-call link, are images described.

The WestSideSite Free Website Check reads up to five public pages. It does not log in, submit forms or change anything, and it follows your robots.txt. An AI model then helps turn the recorded facts into readable findings.

What it can establish.

Things that can be observed directly in the code and text.

  • Whether pages load, and whether your site uses HTTPS
  • Whether titles, descriptions, headings and canonical addresses are present
  • Whether your phone number is a tap-to-call link and whether contact forms exist
  • Whether business details such as an address or services are written on the pages
  • Whether images have descriptions, and whether obvious placeholder text is left over
  • Whether a sitemap and robots.txt exist

What it cannot establish.

An automated review of public pages has real limits. A report that hides them is not trustworthy.

  • How the site looks. The WestSideSite check takes no screenshots and does not render pages in a browser
  • How the site feels on a phone: layout, text size, spacing and tap targets. Its mobile category is labelled a limited assessment because of this
  • Where you rank. It does not look up search positions, and a score is not a ranking
  • Whether you will be mentioned or recommended by any search engine or AI tool
  • Page speed or Core Web Vitals. A single server response time is informational only
  • How many visitors become customers
  • Anything off your website: reviews, listings, social profiles or your reputation

How to read a score.

A score is a summary of what could be observed on a few pages on one day. In the WestSideSite check, each of eight categories starts from objective checks, and AI can move it only within fixed limits. The final numbers are calculated by our own code, so the model cannot hand out a number.

Use the score to decide where to look, not as a grade. A lower number in one category usually points to one or two specific, fixable things, and the report lists them. See a sample report on a fictional business to check this for yourself.

When the check cannot read your site.

Some sites cannot be reviewed reliably: they block automated visitors, are built entirely with scripts, or have a problem with their security certificate. We do not guess in those cases. If the site cannot be read safely, we send no score. When the cause is a genuinely invalid security certificate, you receive a short limited report that explains only what was observed and how to fix it. Otherwise we follow up with you.

Your submitted details are used to run the review and email your report. The public text of your pages is sent to an AI service, with phone numbers and email addresses removed first. The Privacy Policy has the details.

Questions about automated reviews.

Is a person involved?
The check is automated. A person looks at it when the automation cannot finish reliably, and you can reply to the report email with questions.
Can I trust the AI-written findings?
Treat them as a useful first read. They are limited to the facts the review recorded, but AI can be imperfect, so check anything that matters against your own site.
Does a high score mean I do not need a better website?
Not necessarily. It means the basics that can be observed are in place. It says nothing about how the site looks or whether it persuades visitors.
